This lets you practice meandering while just moving in one general direction (to the right) instead of all over the quilt. Or you could just meander in wide (6-10") rows across the quilt, keeping the edges curvy on each row so the next row can nestle up against it. I like the way Elizabeth of Oh, Fransson plans her quilting, shown in this picture. Leah Day of the Free Motion Quilting Project talks about how she sections a quilt in this video. Make a plan before you start about how you will move across the quilt. That way when you stitch the adjacent area the "join" between the two disappears, and it looks like one cohesive unit instead of two separate areas. Let the edges of any area you're stitching be curvy.Use a colored marker and you could reuse your sketch paper for wrapping paper! This is just like any other skill, it improves with practice. Paper is way cheaper than fabric and with meandering you have to get your brain used to figuring out where to go next while keeping the pattern curvy and consistent like you want it. If meandering is getting you down, stitch something else for a few quilts.

There are easier pattern for beginners to start with, so don't feel like you have to meander right out of the gate. Keep trying! Meandering looks so simple but it really takes a fair amount of practice.I emailed her my advice (this was, ahem, ages ago), and wanted to bring the subject up here too. She said she felt like she was quilting an area and then drawing "a long lonely line" to get to the next area. (It seems like it should be so easy, right?) She asked me about keeping the pattern even, how to see where you are going across the quilt when you are working one small area at a time. And, I am hosting her UFO Busting party this Saturday while she is partying away-I mean at a quilting retreat!Ĭonnecting Threads (no affiliation) also has some great items on clearance.Laura sort of hit a wall on meandering, which I think is a common experience when quilters first try this pattern. I'm using a Blenders Botanical in my Fireburst mystery quilt with Tish at The Madd Quilter. This is a great time to pick up Hobbs Batting, and Craftsy's own Boundless Blenders Botanical, both products which I've bought myself from them and been very happy with. Thank you so very much for the support as that is what I use to pay for linky parties like TBT and DrEAMi!. I get about 4% commission which does not cost you any extra if you purchase through my links here or on the sidebar. 9, Craftsy (affiliate link) is blowing out supplies again at up to 70% off for a flash sale. Okay, tutorial for this FMQ meander which I used on my Throwback Thursday quilt post, Sunny Days:Īlso, for 24 hours starting from noon EST, today, Oct. However, now I listen and look up once in awhile, and if it's something I'm really interested in, right within the app it remembers where you'd left off, just like Netflix, so, when I am not sewing, I can go back, rewind a bit and pay proper attention!

I'm finding I watch more because I signed up for the year subscription, and I'm not worrying so much if I'm sewing while 'watching', something I never do because I can't do both of those things well at the same time. on bluprint? (affiliate link) You can watch for free during their 'Get Started With Bluprint' Event, on now through Oct. I first saw it in a long-ago issue of American Patchwork & Quilting on a quilt, back when "Quilt as desired" was all you'd get for quilting suggestions, and maybe, just maybe, you could figure out some of the motif from photos.Īs Angela says, "Let's get started!" (btw did you see her new QAL, 'Glorious Dawn'? So pretty in any one of the three colourways. It's easy to do on either a domestic or a longarm. As promised, here is a quick tutorial for a fast, fun and easy all-over meander.
